New Health Care Law

I am writing this letter to hopefully get an explanation or direction in how the Child Support Enforcement Agency/State of Ohio/Federal Government (whoever) plans on dealing with the new crisis they have created for custodial parents.

While my family is original and rather complicated, I feel it gives a perfect picture of the chaos that the new health care laws have created. My husband and I are a blended family, he had one child, I had three and we had one together. When my husband married me, he also married health care responsibility to three new children; although if I die tomorrow, not only do those three children no longer have health care but he has no right to them at all. (This is a different issue, but one that I feel noteworthy).

I have three support orders for the children that I had prior to our marriage and my husband pays support through an order for his child. In every order, there is “court ordered” attention to ‘the health care needs of the child(ren) named above that exceed the amount of cash medical support ordered to be paid, if any, when private health insurance coverage is not available or is not being provided in accordance with the support order, OR of the uninsured health care costs that covers the child(ren) named above, when private health insurance coverage is being provided in accordance with the support order’. Under the older model for health care, prior to high deductibles, most doctor appointments required a small co-pay around $20-$50. If I received the co-pay it was great and if not, it wasn’t a debilitating debt. Now, under my husband’s new employer sponsored high deductible health care plan, a bout with Impetigo cost us roughly $400 out of pocket. So we are looking at an additional $200 that month which could have been used to feed our growing family, that is NOT our responsibility, and that we most likely will never collect. When I have contacted CSEA to inquire about what I am to do now, I am told that I need to file in small claims court for this money. My question is; to what end? Do I have to keep track of all the bills and file every year? And if so, does anyone really believe this is going to be an effective means of collecting this money? I have two fathers that choose not to support their children with license suspensions and incarceration looming. I highly doubt a small claims finding will ever be paid.

Now one could say that the health care is included into the child support, but that is only the monthly fee that my husband has withdrawn from his check by his employer. When I recently had a case modified, I was told that the CSEA doesn’t deal with deductibles, so who does?

I’ve always been a proponent of unionized healthcare. In high school, I was blown away when they told us that in Switzerland everyone had health care. I also realize that in order for this to be a reality, someone has to pay for it and that someone is the middle class, I get it, I really do. What I do not understand is how law makers could overlook something so broadly spread in our society. While I do not have actual statistics on hand, I can guarantee that this effects a large proportion of our population since so many families are blended. When I hear people complain about the new health care laws, it makes me cringe inside because they can’t even begin to understand how grievous they actually are for a family like mine.

I am very interested to hear if any of the people that represent me know anything about what I am speaking of and what steps they plan to take to rectify the issues these laws have created for the population that do work hard and handle their responsibilities. I feel it is time that the government stops assisting dead beat parents and starts promoting the efforts of those who do raise and support their children.

Where have I been??

I just realized that it's been 13 days since I last posted!!! Well it's been crazy hectic! Last Tuesday and today, I offered a coupon class at the Madison Food Center to teach those interested in learning how to save some money. Later this evening, I am beginning my post-graduate classes at CSU (very nervous about this!) Wednesday, I have the very first coupon class in Mayfield Heights (if we have enough participants!) So as you can see...I am busy, busy, busy! We've mostly been living off of our stockpile while just picking up random items such as milk, soda and coffee. AND I actually made a trip to Walmart the other night where I used almost NO COUPONS! Sometimes it just happens that way. I did find some fun new products to try out, such as the pre-made, just bake, your own scones! They had chocolate chip and almond, I chose almond and can't wait to try them! I did find bonus packs of Activia yogurt (they have six cups instead of the standard four, for the same price.) I think they were $2.18 and I used the 1/15/12 $1.00 off coupon and got six yogurts for $1.18! I anticipate needing food this week, so I hope to post Giant Eagle deals this week and let you know what I'll be getting for free or very cheap! If you are a newbie from Madison or Mayfield Heights, welcome to the site and please contact me with any questions! Have a great week!

Update on Rewards R Us.....

So I was hesitant to update you on my shopping trip to Babies R Us, because as hard as it may be to believe...I made a huge mistake. Actually two! The first mistake I made was forgetting that even though TRU/BRU give multiple rewards, half of mine expire on January 13th and the other half don't START until January 14th. So I was unable to use all of the coupons I had in hand. Also, the $10/$50 clothing purchase they emailed to me said under the very first exclusion: Clearance. Not sure how I missed that, but I still got a pretty good deal.
I went straight for accessories because our son takes his socks off everywhere and always seems to need more. I found a 4 pack of neutral colored socks for $2.00 - .80 (40% off) so $1.20. I then made my way to the onesies, as he is around 18 months now and it is difficult to find larger size onesies at a good price. I found a 4-pack of short sleeve Gerber onesies and a 2-pack of long sleeve onesies both on clearance for around $4.00 minus the 40% off clearance. And my most favorite part of the day....was finding out that Under Armour separates were also included in the 40% off sale!  I bought a pair of track pants and a tshirt for the baby boy and a skirt and tshirt  for our toddler daughter. After the 40% off clearance sale and my RewardsRUs coupons, I paid around $20.00. The Under Armour track pants were priced around $20-25 retail!
Sorry for the estimates on most of these items, I think I tossed my receipt while cleaning up Christmas and I'm not willing to go into a sleeping little guy's room to check the tags. But as you can easily see, this was a great deal. I intend to return after the 14th to use the rest of my coupons and plan to seek out the Under Armour clearance as I think the little ones look so cute in them and they are very difficult to find this cheaply.
Did you go to Babies R Us? Find any good deals? Also, if you have older children, where do you get their clothes?

Happy New Year!!!

So with the new year upon us in 7 minutes, I have decided that my resolution will be to say NO more often when it's important to my family not to overload our schedule. AND to learn to forgive a little more. Forgiveness is the greatest gift you can give, to YOURSELF! Have a fabulous New Year!

Rewards "R" Us!!!

So today I was randomly going through emails and realized that I had a Rewards "R" Us email from Toys R Us / Babies R Us. And if you don't already have a Toys R Us/ Babies R Us, you should definitely sign up for one even if you don't have children! As I highlight in my classes, TRU and BRU have many none children related items such as cleaning and household items that most people don't think to purchase there. These items also become clearance items often because they sit around and end up getting phased out. With all that being said, when I received my Rewards R Us certificates today, I realized that I had done Black Friday shopping there and my rewards are around $17!! Plus they send other additional item specific coupons along with your rewards. AND right now they are having huge clearance clothing sales, so I bet you can guess where I will be going tomorrow!?! I will be sure to post about my AMAZING deal!

Fails? of 2011 Amazon/Blogger and Ecomom

So when I discuss my blog in a public setting, I say that I only post deals that either I personally try or have tried in the past; or every so often, I list one that I would do but can't due to monetary restrictions or time frames. And yet there is still one other category of deals, the ones I do myself but don't post for others. I do this because they are a gamble. The too good to be true deal or the I've never heard of this company/product before deal. I want my reader to always have a positive experience, so if I think there's a chance something could go wrong, I risk it myself first. The epic fail of 2011 was an Amazon deal for ThinkFun Rush Hour 2. When I seen the deal posted on a different blogger's site, it was for 2 "games" that the blogger had noted would be great stocking stuffers. I viewed the game on Amazon and decided that for around $7 shipped, these seemed like to nice games to add to the present closet. When I received the games, there was a small note on the packaging that basically said they basically were refills for the larger game; so worthless in the gift closet. I have since returned them to Amazon and am waiting for a credit. But this was an extreme hassle because I had to ship them UPS (they don't usually stop by my house) and "IF" Amazon charges me return shipping, it will eat up the entire cost of the refund! So BOO this was a major fail!

The next "possible" fail of the year is a deal for Ecomom. Ecomom is an online company that sells green products and recently did an AMAZING black friday deal, combined with vouchers from LivingSocial, Plum District and at least another daily deal site. I chose not to post this because it definitely seems too good to be true. The deal is: buy a voucher from the deal site for $25 for $50 worth of merchandise. I believe I had a credit with the daily deal site I used, making my voucher's cost around $15. The voucher was then combined with the website Black Friday sale, which was free shipping and $40 off a $100 order! So if you're doing the math, that's around $25 shipped for $100 worth of products!! 75% off! So I tried this deal but did not post it. As you can imagine, the company got extremely overwhelmed! There site crashed and they informed customers via Facebook that they WOULD fix this. That people WOULD get their orders in time for Christmas. And WOULD get the Black Friday deal. First you had to email your order, then for some reason that didn't work out so they sent a form out that had to be filled out. This company is frantically working around the clock to fix this! In the wee hours of the morning last night, I received a message informing me that 4 of my items have shipped and that 4 of my items are in their warehouse awaiting shipment. They have 8 days to go....I'm not sure how this will all work out for Ecomom and although I got a FABULOUS deal if my items show up, I'd much rather forgo the frustration and not purchase a deal that is so random. God Speed Ecomom and Merry Christmas to all!
